Democrats weigh in on Governors budget plan PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 03 December 2008 08:14
On Monday, Governor Ted Kulongoski released his proposed budget for the next biennium, and yesterday Democrats in the House and Senate released a statement showing that they’re mostly in line with what the Governor proposes. While the $15.8 billion budget is 6.8% higher than the current budget, increased costs and more requests for aid have eaten up the extra money. The Governor has called for a $750 million cut in the Department of Human Services budget, and while Senate Majority Leader Margaret Carter says cuts must be made, she doesn’t think DHS should bear the brunt of those cuts alone: ***/Dems respond/Margaret Carter/…We think that there are some things within the budgets already where we can do some improvements and look and see where we can make some things a little meaner…leaner than they are right now…/*** But Senate President Peter Courtney says they agree with the Governors transportation package, and he anticipates the Senate will approve at least one capitol improvement project as a way to stimulate job growth and the economy. The legislature will get back to work on January 12th. So far there has been no response from Republicans on the proposed budget.

With the holiday shopping season in full swing, many of us will soon be making a trip to the post office to send those holiday gifts to loved ones far away. But this year, the U.S. Postal Service is taking steps to make shipping your gifts even easier- and you can do most of your business with them on line. Postal service spokesman Ron Anderson says you can do everything from planning a shipment and arranging for your package to be picked up to buying your postage and even make your own personal greeting cards. It all starts with packing those gifts. Anderson says packages can weigh no more than seventy pounds and the box can be no bigger then 130 total inches measuring length and width. He also there are some things to avoid when sealing the packages: ***/Shipping tips/Ron Anderson/…Using string or twine, maybe masking tape. All of those things either get caught up in the mail processing equipment that we use to transport the package, or, in the case of masking tape, it’s really designed to come off- and, unfortunately, it does…/*** Instead, use packing tape to seal your packages. When you’re ready to ship the package, Anderson says to go online where you can save 3-10% on shipping costs. The website is usps.com
