Penitentiary Cuts Drug Dog Program PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 28 August 2008 09:00
A huge budget shortfall for the Department of Corrections has officials cutting program—and the Narcotics Enforcement Team will be the first to go. A drug sniffing Labrador retriever at the Washington State Penitentiary will serve his last day September 30th. ***replaced/…my understanding that the k-9 units are used to search for contraband in prisons and will be replaced with searches they’re already doing…/*** The DOC’s Susan Lucas says that means officers will continue to open all mail before it’s delivered to offenders, and will continue to search visitors just like normal. But how much does a drug sniff dog really cost? Lucas says there’s more costs than you’d expect. A full-time special officer trained to handle the dog must be on the staff, and has to undergo dozens of hours of training on a continuous basis. That officer will not be laid off in the cuts—instead they will be placed in an open position in the facility. Lucas says the elimination of the program is expected to save 272-thousand dollars each year.

School Pleased Yet Surprised With WASL Results PDF Print E-mail

Results for the latest round of WASL tests are out—and nearly all tenth graders who took the exam passed both the reading and writing sections. Both sections are a graduation requirement. The news wasn’t so good when it came to the math and science portions. Only about half of all students passed the science sections—and even less passed math—but those sections are not required to graduate. Students who failed to make the mark can take additional classes as an alternative. Fourth and seventh graders who took the test didn’t fare as well as the tenth graders. About 60 percent passed the writing portions—and 40 percent passed the math section. Scores were scattered for the writing portion—50 percent of 4th graders passed, and 64 percent of all 7th graders passed. Ron Higgins Director of Assessment at Walla Walla Public Schools says the results are a little surprising. Some student’s scores have decreased from last year—while other has dramatically risen/ Higgins says scores will be use to determine where improvements need to be made.

The Clover is a complex brewing system that was once the domain of independent coffee makers and hard-core coffee fans—and will now be available to all coffee drinkers. The system—that use to sell for about 11-thouasnd dollars--makes one cup at a time and aims to get out each of the hundreds of flavors known to reside in the average coffee bean. In addition to brewing a complex flavor, the by-the-cup versatility means a wider array of beans can be used - creating a top-shelf coffee menu. The company tested the product in a handful of stores this spring and summer and unveiled the system at 10 Seattle sites Tuesday with more to come in the coming months. Starbucks will sell hot and iced versions of the coffee for $2 to $4.
