Sweets sink Pirates in Moses Lake
| Walla Walla Valley Sports |
Moses Lake –
The Walla Walla Sweets left Larson Field with their second consecutive win over the Moses Lake Pirates. Sunday’s win gave Walla Walla the series, and their 11th win on the season.
Dennis Holt (UCLA) blew things open for the Sweets when he blasted a 2 run home run early in the game, scoring teammate Andy Matthews (Lewis & Clark), and taking a 2 – 0 lead. Hot hitting from Dennis Holt, Andy Matthews, and Josh Daniel (St. John’s) led the Sweets offensively. Holt went 2 for 4 at the plate with 2 RBI, Matthews went 2 for 4 with a double, and Daniel went 1 for 4 with an RBI.
Top notch pitching from Joey Wagman (Cal Poly) stifled the Pirates, only giving up 1 hit through the first 4 innings of play, and only 3 more hits after that.
Bryndon Ecklund started chipping away for his Pirates with an RBI single in the 5th, giving them their first run of the game. His efforts weren’t enough as Josh Daniel answered back in the 6th smashing an RBI single to extend their lead, and eventually give them the game.
Sweets are now 4 games back of the Pirates for the last playoff spot in the Eastern Division with just 3 weeks left in the season. Walla Walla will entertain the Portland Stars for a two game series starting Tuesday night. The games versus the Stars do not count in the standings as they are considered exhibition. The Sweets return to League play Thursday night as they open a 3 game series with the Western Division leading Bend Elks.
